The week starts with the Sun and Mercury together in Taurus. This is like the start button for that new idea you’ve been wanting to try. Since Mercury is about communication, and, the past two months opened up a plethora of new methods of communication like family meetings on Zoom, or travel trips via Virtual portals, a new path to communicate and prosper is opening up as people get used to these alternative ways of being with each other. Many of us have been working online a lot these days and like exercise, the more you do it, the more your imagination opens as to how else to use this amazing technology.
The world is changing its networks and the way it shares or organizes information. Like exercise, if you do it for at least 21 days, you develop a habit and become more confident in this virtual existence whose structure is electronic.
The Full Moon I Scorpio and Taurus on Thursday shines a light on what we really need versus what we want, affecting our purchasing habits, what we buy, what we consume and how much we really need versus want. I spoke with a buddy of mine today who said he always went to the barber to cut his hair, but now he can’t go and so he bought a hair cutting machine and figured out that what he paid for the entire set is what he paid for two haircuts. He has always been on a very limited income and this is a way for him to save something right now. Then we see that barbers and hairdressers are struggling and how do they make their living as we become more self-reliant? Barbers and hairdressers usually rent spaces in which they can work. What happens to them and any of the beauty services? Uranus in Taurus is about waking up to a completely different way of administering these services. There is going to be a major revolution in this field as these things have changed in these last few months — perhaps more personal concierge type services accompanying the in-house beauty station. Or groups of hairdressers or barbers or nail people forming service collectives where they work together to better service their clients in their homes or where they travel more for their work, or, even, style trucks instead of food trucks where they come to you instead of you going to them. Anything is possible.
Food: I went on a walk recently to get some fresh air and changed it up and went over to some hills close to my home where there are very few people. It is spring and I noticed all the chamomile growing on the trail along with the fennel, the mustard greens and realized that these are all nature’s gift to us but many of us just don’t notice. When I took art classes at Laney College another lifetime ago, one of my fellow students had a book called “Eat the Weeds” and was fully aware of the bounty in the California hills.
That walk triggered a memory of mine when my brother and I were children. My mother would take us out to the Dan Ryan Forest Preserves on the south side of Chicago. These were and still are beautiful and heavily forested recreation areas for families to picnic. Where others were picnicking, we were picking dandelion greens for our supper in the spring and grape leaves other times of the year where my mother and I would string the leaves for Dolmades (Greek grape leaves) for future meals. My mother would take us to pick dandelion greens, and, asparagus, when there was an asparagus farm near where my Dad was selling real estate. That is whereas a little girl I became quite handy with a knife as you cut asparagus stems when you harvest them and leave the rest for them to return next year. Those were times our family figured out a way to get through some of the more difficult moments that every family goes through until we cycle back to whatever is normal. It was also a fabulous lesson about the earth.
Forgive me for going down memory lane. The point of all of this is that we have all changed something about how we behave and maintain in this new world of more limited options. Many have learned how to fix things in their houses. Many have learned how to learn new things online. Many have even learned how to cook rather than going out to eat. This is a good thing. We are back to basics and this is a healthy awareness coming with the full moon of this week.
Mercury and Pluto support these insights as they are in a beautiful aspect to each other on Saturday May 9… an excellent window for checking out your finances, your budgets and figuring out the things you need to figure out regarding your bills and invoices.
And here is one last gem from Mary Stathis, my mother, “If you have lots of people suddenly showing up for dinner, and you don’t have food in the house, don’t panic. Just pull out the spaghetti, have some good Greek Cheese (mizithra on hand) and make up a big pot of Greek Spaghetti.” She was right and no one ever knew the difference and a good time was had by all. Though my mother is gone, she is still here. So Happy Mother’s Day Mom. And to all you moms out there…
