Time feels as if it is moving quickly, especially around yesterday’s New Moon on Sunday, June 14, at 24° Gemini 03’, a moment linked with beginnings and new plantings. Gemini is lively and active, always connecting ideas and people while moving through different realms of time and space. Fittingly, Mercury—or Hermes in Greek mythology—is the only god who can enter and leave the underworld unharmed. That gift can work in two ways: it can help less honorable figures avoid consequences, or it can give problem-solvers the insight to understand and undo what their own shadow side has created. Gemini’s link to the twins comes from Castor, the mortal brother, and Pollux, his immortal twin, both loyal warriors of Zeus. When Castor is killed, the brothers are separated, an unbearable fate for twins. Because they have served Zeus faithfully, they plead to be reunited. Yet Hades, or Pluto, ruler of the Underworld, must keep Castor’s soul after death. In a classic mythological compromise, the brothers cannot remain together, but they exchange places every twelve hours. Through this exchange, each comes to know and feel the other’s experience, preserving their bond as fully as possible.
When several planets gather in Gemini, especially under a New Moon that begins a cycle, we are asked to see both sides: to understand what is and what is not, to investigate, to ask uncomfortable questions, and to feel as well as think through our actions. This is not always easy for Gemini energy, where intellect and emotion—like the two brothers—are constantly rotating, weighing possibilities, and seeking a workable solution. Problems arise when actions have no consequences and mistakes go uncorrected. In Mercury’s story, Zeus is delighted by the newborn god, who leaps from his cradle, steals Apollo’s sheep or cattle, and then acts as though nothing happened. Because Hermes/Mercury is clever and charming, he avoids consequences. Zeus allows it, and as Hermes matures, cleverness can become wiliness. This quality can either create problems or help solve them, but first we must wake up and cut through the confusion of events.
Over the next two weeks, transiting Uranus—the great awakener and revolutionary thinker—squares the transiting lunar nodes at 2◦ Pisces and 2◦ Virgo, bringing a strong current of public awakening (the Lunar nodes have to do with the public). This is happening on a broad scale, as recent revelations show a sea change in positions, and on a personal scale as well, helping individuals discover solutions, refine ideas, or clarify ongoing miscommunications. Uranus is also close to transiting Ceres—Demeter, goddess of the harvest in Greek myth—suggesting an awakening among farmers. Those working the land are deciding whether to keep, sell, or change their farms as they face extreme costs and pressures, another Uranian theme.
If you are involved in a business where something is not working, yet you know the idea still has value, pause with it, refine it, and seek out people who understand the details you may not. This is one of Gemini’s strengths: it may not know everything, but it has a remarkable ability to connect pieces and parts until a solution emerges. That process, however, depends on clear and honest communication. It also requires strategic planning and research signified by the current transit of Saturn in Aries, ruled by Mars, which can be violent and reactive or strategic and courageous. Again two sides.
For those now in their late seventies, Sunday’s New Moon on your natal Uranus, together with the next New Moon on July 14 in the later degrees of Cancer, may bring the insight you have been trying to reach through an idea, community, or group. Sometimes, to get from A to B, you must let go of the parts of A that no longer work and begin a small revolution in your own thinking, sometimes even a separation as one of the themes of Uranus is both separation and then fusion. This fits the symbolism of the New Moon in late Gemini, which falls in the Aquarian decanate ruled by Uranus. Over the next five weeks, Uranus also works smoothly with Pluto in Aquarius. Thoughts are moving, new perspectives are birthing and perhaps that is why time has seemed to speed up in recent weeks.
